Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and S Pen are “biting” again. The guilty case with a magnet!
Users of the latest Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra are reporting problems with the performance of the S Pen stylus when using magnetic cases and accessories. The smartphone displays warnings about possible interference, which can affect typing accuracy and cause commands to be triggered accidentally. It turns out that this is not new at all – Samsung has been struggling with the same problem since the Note series.
S Pen vs. magnets – a story that comes back like a boomerang
In recent weeks, there have been an increasing number of reports on Reddit and technology sites from Galaxy S25 Ultra users who have noticed that their smartphone does not work well with magnetic cases. When the accessory is connected, the screen displays a message:
“Magnetic accessories can interfere with your S Pen. The magnets in accessories can interfere with the signals your S Pen sends to your phone. They may cause your S Pen to not write correctly or cause Air commands to occur unintentionally.”
The problem was also brought to the attention of Android Central, which confirmed that the message does indeed pop up with some magnetic cases. Interestingly, editor Andrew Myrick noted that the warning does not pop up when using the MagSafe adapter with Samsung’s official silicone case. This could mean that it is not only the presence of the magnet itself that matters, but also the distance between the stylus and the source of the magnetic field, as well as the strength and size of the magnet.
Not a new bug but an age-old problem
While the topic has resurfaced with the launch of the latest flagship, it is hardly a new phenomenon. Samsung had already published a warning in 2020 – back in the days of the Galaxy Note 8 – that the S Pen could malfunction when used with magnetic covers. At the time, the company recommended that users hold the stylus more vertically and use more pressure… which, to put it mildly, was not a solution to the problem.
Despite the passage of years and successive generations of devices, the S Pen’s operating mechanism remains susceptible to magnetic interference. The stylus communicates with the screen via electromagnetic induction, and strong magnetic fields from cases or grips can interfere with this signal, causing delays, tracking errors or accidental command activations.
MagSafe or security? The user must choose
The situation is unfortunate, as more and more accessory manufacturers, including those for the Galaxy S25 Ultra, are betting on MagSafe technology – magnetic rings that make charging and mounting accessories easier. For owners of the new flagships, this means a difficult choice: safe protection of the phone with MagSafe, or full functionality of the S Pen stylus.
So far, Samsung has not announced any solution to the problem. Users who frequently use the S Pen are simply coping in the simplest way – avoid magnetic cases or choose models in which the magnet is placed as far as possible from the bottom edge of the device, where the stylus rests.
Still the same in 2025?
It’s hard not to get the impression that in 2025 such problems should no longer exist. Since Samsung abandoned Bluetooth in the S25 Ultra stylus, users could at least hope for seamless operation of basic functions. Meanwhile, the story has come full circle – and literally, because the culprits are… the magnetic rings in the case.
